Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) Noordin Haji has written to the Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai asking him to launch investigations into a leaked audio clip doing rounds on social media with a voice likened to that of Suna East Member of Parliament (MP) Junet Mohammed speaking to an alleged Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) official about a high-level meeting ahead of election.
In the letter directed to the IG, the DPP stated that the remarks in the audio clip shared on Sunday, July 31, were contrary to Section 20 (2) of the Elections Offences Act, 2016 and Section 17 of the computer Misuse and Cyber Crimes Act, 2018.
The agency further urged the police IG to move swiftly and start investigations.
“Accordingly under Article 157(4) of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, you are hereby directed to undertake comprehensive investigations into the aforementioned audio recording including the source thereto, interception thereof and transmission thereto. The investigation file should be submitted to the office within seven (7)days of the date thereof,” the letter reads in parts.
Alleged audio of Junet and an IEBC official leaks
In the audio clip that went viral, the legislator was heard conversing in his local dialect with an alleged IEBC official about a high level meeting they were supposed to have with the heads of the commission.
Voice 1: “Can you bring Chebukati?”
Voice 2: “Yes.”
Voice 1: “Good. Chebukati, you, Guliye, Molu, and the CEO…We will discuss this matter and we have to come up with a solution. There is a problem there, we need to sort it out,” Junet is allegedly heard saying.
