Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege has, for the first time, spoken about her rumoured relationship with the Late Kikuyu Benga maestro, John De’Mathew.

Ms Chege vehemently denies allegations published on blogs in Kenya claiming she, in the past, was entangled in a steamy love affair with the Late De’Mathew, whose real name is John Mwangi.

Speaking at the funeral service of the legendary artiste in Gatanga, Murang’a County on Saturday, August 24, Sabina Chege said, yes, De’Mathew was her personal friend, but not a lover.

Sabina Chege featured as a vixen in the Late De’Mathew’s song called Njata Yakwa, which she played the role of his wife.

Addressing mourners at Githambia Primary School in Mukurwe, Gatanga, Ms Chege emotionally said: “I was not involved in any romantic relationship with the Late De’Mathew. Yes, he was my good friend, but not a lover. I respect myself, I respect De’Mathew’s family.”

“If we, indeed, had a relationship, which yielded a son, then that child would be here today for his father’s burial. I am a married woman, who has children, and I respect my husband and my children. I, therefore, urge the media, [especially blogs], to refrain from publishing fabricated allegations. The media should, instead, be sensitive and respectful to De’Mathew’s family,” said Sabina Chege.

De’Mathew, who is survived by two wives and seven children, died in Thika last Sunday, August 18, in a grisly car crash.

De’Mathew died aged 52.

Meanwhile, former presidential candidate, Peter Kenneth, said that he alongside Gatanga MP Joseph Nduati and ex-Jubilee Party Vice Chairman, David Murathe, have joined hands to fund the education of De’Mathew’s children.

De’Mathew, who produced more than 375 songs and 50 albums in his decorated career, was laid to rest at his home in Mukurwe Village, Murang’a County.
