Kiambu governor James Nyoro has announced the formation of the Single Mothers Movement in the county.

He says that the number of single mothers in the county is increasing by the day hence the need to bring them together with the aim of helping them start income-generating activities.

“We are alarmed by the high number of single mothers in Kiambu which is over 60 per cent of mothers in the county. There’s a need therefore to form a movement like a fund where they will be getting loans to initiate income generating projects in their localities”, he told more than 2000 women who had gathered at a Kiambu establishment.

He said that it’s unfortunate to see single mothers being treated like outcasts both by their parents and society.

Adding; “It’s not that we are advocating single motherhood as our detractors would want Kenyans to believe. What we are saying is that when they become financially stable, they can get married and pool together with their spouses.”

Nyoro who later campaigned in Kiambu town, Thika and Kabete promised that if elected governor on August 9, he will also address the ills affecting male youths in the area.

“I want us to stop referring to our male youths as jeshi. The word entertains militarism in them which is counterproductive,” he said.

“My administration will address matters affecting widows and all the vulnerable members in society,” he added.

The governor who is gunning for the seat on a Jubilee ticket will face it off with UDA’s Kimani Wamatangi, Patrick Wainaina (Independent), Mwende Gatabaki (Safina) Moses Kuria and William Kabogo of Chama Cha Kazi and Tujibebe Wakenya party respectively exuded confidence that he will win the seat with an overwhelming majority.
