The Nithi bridge tragedy that took away 33 lives has exposed the rot in the Modern Coast bus company.

Reports show that the 45-seater modern coast bus, registration number KCF 614 U had been spotted as unroadworthy and had previously been involved in a number of accidents.

Numerous concerns dating back to 2016 had also been raised on social media in vain.

In 2016, the bus was on headlines for hooting loudly while in traffic and being on the road without backlights.

The bus accidentally hit a stationary truck along the Mombasa-Malindi highway in December 2017 barely months after another fatal accident near Malindi airport in April 2017.

In December 2016, a video of a bus from the company was seen driving in the wrong lane along the Nithi Bridge black spot stirring backlash.

Consequently, the driver was fired and the company was forced to issue a public apology.

The wife of the driver while speaking to the media today also revealed that her husband had notified the company of failing brakes but the issue was not addressed.
