Man burns stepson using hot metal after losing Ksh10 meant for cigarettes

A 12-year-old minor is nursing severe burn wounds after he was allegedly burnt by his stepfather over claims of having lost Ksh10.

The matter was reported at Kibaoni police station by hospital staff at the Muhamarani Kibaoni, Mpeketoni Lamu county, where he was rushed following the incident.

The police report indicates that the suspect, Samuel Mwangi, used a hot metal bar on the minor’s hands, legs and buttocks after the suspect allegedly, accused the minor of having lost the money meant to buy a cigarette.

At the time of the incident, the minor’s mother was not present.

According to Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) – Lamu county officer Mohammed Skanda, the suspect had been arrested and will be arraigned before Mpeketoni law courts.

“The suspect has been arrested, arraigned before the court however he is yet to take a plea since the minor is yet to record his statement due to pain,” he said

He further added that his organization, alongside gender officers, were closely following on the matter.

“He was detained for several days to allow completion of investigations, and he will be produced in court on Wednesday to answer to relevant charges, and we are closely following up on the matter to ensure that the minor gets justice,” Skanda said.

The minor is in stable condition at the Mpeketoni District hospital, where he is still receiving treatment.
