National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Nacada) has cautioned politicians against popularising prohibited drugs to gain political mileage.
The authority insisted that trade in bhang (Cannabis Sativa) remains illegal in Kenya.
In a statement, NACADA Chief Executive Officer Victor Okioma said politicians making statements in favour of legalisation of some drugs are misleading.
“Let it be known that the law is still in force and that anyone contravening this law i.e being in possession or trading in cannabis will be apprehended,” he said.
NACADA comments come amid political promises
The authority’s comments come at a time when Roots Party presidential candidate Prof. George Wajackoyah has been pushing for the legalisation and sale of bhang to settle Kenya’s debts.
“If we grew bhang in Nyeri alone in one year, we can pay Kenya’s entire debt portfolio. If we can grow bhang in Nyeri alone, each Kenyan could get a dividend cheque of Ksh200,000 every year from the sale of bhang. If we grew Bangi in Nyeri alone, we would build two expressways in each county in Kenya.
“If we grew bhang in Nyeri alone, Kenya could buy Bill Gates and Microsoft in just two years. If we grew bhang in Nyeri alone, Kenya will have 10 per cent of IMF total cash reserves. In short, we will never have to borrow a single coin in future,” Wajackoya said.
