Controversial Nairobi businesswoman Joyce Akinyi has been charged with trafficking narcotics worth Sh5 million.

Ms Akinyi came to the limelight after being involved in public spats with her estranged husband Nigerian trader Antony Chinedu.

She was charged alongside a Kenyan and a Congolese man for allegedly trafficking heroin valued at Sh5,588,580.

Ms Akinyi, Ms Peris Anyango Omondi and Mr Paulin Kalala Musankinshay appeared before Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts Magistrate Christine Njagi and denied the charges.

Particulars of the offence are that on July 13, 2019, at Deep West Resort within Nairobi, they trafficked heroine.

Ms Akinyi and Ms Omondi are further charged with possessing forged Democratic Republic of Congo passports.

Ms Akinyi was arrested on July 13 by detectives who had been trailing her over suspicion of being involved in drug-trafficking.

Police said they seized Ms Akinyi at her hotel in Nairobi West, where they allegedly found 2 kilograms of white powder which they first suspected to be cocaine.

Ms Akinyi’s past is riddled with drug-trafficking allegations.
