A Guyanese national, who was recently arrested at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) over alleged drug trafficking, has been deported to the United States.

Christopher Richard Spencer was deported on Saturday night, June 18, 2022, to the U.S via a New York-bound flight, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed.

In a statement on Sunday, DCI boss George Kinoti said the suspect was extradited to face justice in the US where he is wanted over drug trafficking-related charges.

Spencer was arrested on Friday, shortly after arrival in the country from Sao Paulo in southeastern Brazil.

According to the DCI, Spencer was involved in a cocaine smuggling ring in Guyana, that conspired to smuggle cocaine into the US. Guyana, is a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast.

In 2015, the syndicate allegedly smuggled 1.5kilograms of cocaine through a shoe luggage, leading to Spencer’s arrest in 2016.

The suspect was subsequently taken to court but released on pre-trial conditions.

He is said to have violated the conditions forcing the court to issue a warrant of arrest against him on March 17, 2017.

“Again, he violated pre-trial conditions of non-appearance and change of address without reporting and another warrant issued on March 19, 2018,” DCI said.

The suspect then remained on the run until his arrest at JKIA on Friday morning.
