Police are looking for Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa for branding a Constituency Development Fund (CDF) vehicle with UDA campaign posters.

Barasa is accused of branding the vehicle in United Democratic Alliance (UDA) colours, his photos and those of his party leader Deputy President William Ruto.

He also allegedly replaced GK registration plates on the car with a new registration number KBS 709D.

Confirming the incident, Kimilili sub-county superintendent of police Mwita Maroa said the vehicle was impounded at the lawmaker’s homestead in Nasianda village on Tuesday following extensive investigations and was towed to Kimilili police station then later to Bungoma before it was taken to Nairobi.

“We did this in a joint operation involving officers from the government vehicles check unit, Serious Crimes Unit and Directorate of Criminal Investigations from Nairobi and Kimilili,” he said.

He says the police acted on a tip-off from members of the public who raised concerns after spotting it during his campaign rallies.

“We took the initiative to go to the CDF offices but did not find it there, so we proceeded to his home where we found it,” he said.

Police say they were first denied access to the MP’s compound forcing them to use alternative ways.

“We employed Section 26 of the Criminal Procedures Code that allows us to access anywhere, got into the house and confirmed that indeed it was a CDF vehicle,” he said.

Barasa remains at large as police say that once nabbed, he will answer to charges of forgery and theft of a government vehicle, among other offences.
