Former Machakos County First Lady Lilian Ng’ang’a has come out to weigh in on a debate that has been in the public domain regarding content quality from Kenya’s creative industry.
While giving a comparison between Kenya’s film industry and its counterpart in South Africa, Ng’ang’a noted that the local industry still needs to improve.
She noted the local films lack glamour which can make someone glued to the screen for a very long time.
According to her, Kenyan movies are flat and too predictable hence cannot make one watch them for a very long time, unlike South African movies.
“South African series have the most gripping and twisted scripts that have one glued to the screen for days on end,” Ng’ang’a said.
“No comparison with Kenyan series’. There is a need to up the game. I say.”
Ng’ang’a also pointed out that South African actors are “smooth” and look real in their movies unlike their Kenyan actors whom she claimed are not that creative and do not portray a real story in their movies.
“SA (South Africa) actors are smooth. Kenyans… too much acting,” she said.
Her statement comes amid a push by Kenyan artistes for the local media to play 75 per cent of local content.
The push has, however, received opposition from some quarters who just like Ng’ang’a claim that most local content lack proper quality to be given a lot of airtime in the media.
