Guinness brand ambassador Fireboy, shines brightest as he takes over the city

Nigerian singer Fireboy DML on Saturday, April 9 hit the stage at the Ngong Racecourse, performing to enthusiastic fans who sang along to his songs whilst enjoying a cold Guinness.

The event sponsored by Guinness was packed to the brim making it the biggest event in the city on Saturday night, as the Nairobi nightlife came out to play.

Guinness brought Fireboy to Kenya through its campaign, Black Shines Brightest to celebrate the African creativity that the musician perfectly knows how to showcase.

“Guinness launched its Black Shines Brightest campaign last year which celebrates African creativity and we all agree that Fireboy brings African creativity to the table.

“As Guinness, we want to celebrate creativity in everything that people do,” Guinness Marketing Manager, Wanjiru Murage said on Friday, April 8.

Fireboy was well received in the country and engaged in several activities including visiting the Nairobi National Park courtesy of Guinness.

During the Saturday event, the 25-year-old hit the stage at 2:00 am and started off by performing his legendary hit Champion to mark the beginning of his one and a half-hour set.

He then performed some of his chart-topping hits from Jealous, to Girl from New York City, Vibration, and Eli before shutting the stage with his biggest track yet Peru.

By the time Fireboy closed out the show, he had surely achieved exactly what he set out to do and attendees were left wowed by his performance and the experience that Guinness has brought to them.

DML is signed to YBNL Nation, a record label founded by Nigerian rapper Olamide. His breakthrough single was Jealous which first appeared on YBNL Nation’s collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family in 2018 before it was re-released in March 2019.

In 2019, Fireboy released a romantic single dubbed What If I Say which gained massive attention before releasing another single, King in August. Fireboy DML released his debut studio album Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps on November 29, 2019, with 13 tracks that combined love and social issues with empirical songwriting.

With two albums under his belt, Fireboy has managed to fuse Afrobeats and R&B to carve his own sound, accumulating over 250 million streams worldwide.

His critically-acclaimed hit from 2021, Peru, which was later re-released as a remix with British pop star Ed Sheeran, peaked at Number 79 in the Billboard Hot 100 and is gold-certified in the UK.

In March 2022, Fireboy was featured on the Sickick remix to Madonna’s 1998 single Frozen.

He grew up in Abeokuta, Ogun state where he was also a member of his local church choir and he developed an interest in music while studying at Obafemi Awolowo University.
