Four employees of Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) have denied charges of vandalizing two transformers valued at Sh1.9 million in Thika, Kiambu County and selling the energy infrastructure early this year.
The accused; David Murithi Githinji, Henry Mbae, Jackson Thuo Macharia and Jared Juma Oyoo who were arraigned before Thika Senior Resident Magistrate Vicky Kachuodho.
The first count stated that on the night of January 26 and 27 the four, jointly with others not before court, vandalized a 50KVA transformer valued at Sh1.2 million at Kilimambogo TTC Gate in Thika East Sub County.
They faced a second count of vandalizing a Sh700,000, 100 KVA transformer at Gateiguru, also in Thika East Subcounty, on the night of February 21 and 22.
The four were also charged with corruptly receiving Sh 908, 610 via mobile money transfer being proceeds of illegal sale of the energy infrastructure while being public officers working with Kenya Power and Lighting Company.
Their request to be released on bond was opposed by the prosecutor Jackline Wambani who applied to have the case consolidated with another in which three traders are facing charges of being found in possession of the electricity equipment.
The Magistrate granted the prosecutor’s plea and ruled that the four be detained until April 21, when bond terms will be determined after the two cases are conjoined.
