Police in Thika on Wednesday evening gunned down a notorious gangster who tried to rob Mount Kenya University students.

According to the police, the two students were walking on the Kiang’ombe-Railway road at around 9:00 pm when they were confronted by the thugs.

“The students who later told detectives that they were going to buy the much coveted avocado fruit, were ordered to surrender all their earthly possessions including mobile phones, belts, shoes and clothes,” police said in a statement.

A scream by one of the students alerted the police officers who were on patrol.

“After complying, the badly shaken students were then ordered to surrender their M-pesa PIN numbers at gun point, prompting one of them to let out loud piercing shrieks of despair,” the police added.

Exchange of fire between the cops and the criminals led to the death of one of the thugs.

“When the guns went silent, one thug lay lifeless in a pool of blood as his accomplices leapt to a getaway motorbike heavily wounded,” police further said.

A firearm with two rounds of ammunition and a machete were recovered from the slain thug.
