Eight out of 161 Nairobi residents (5 per cent), who were screened for cancer at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi on Wednesday, August 7, showed signs of the disease.

Seven of the eight (87.5 per cent) had signs of prostate cancer, whereas one (12.5 per cent) portrayed signs of breast cancer.

None of the women, who formed a bulk of the screened city dwellers, showed signs of cervical cancer.

Tissues of the eight, whose screening gave positive results, will be taken for in-depth analysis in a medical laboratory. This will help to ascertain if they indeed contain cancerous cells.

Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital only screened for the three types of cancer – breast, cervical and prostate.

The free cancer screening programme has been organised by Nairobi County Government.

The exercise, which began on Monday, August 5, will end on Monday, August 19.

The services are offered at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Umoja 3 estate and Mbagathi Hospital.

Governor Mike Sonko said he would cater for the treatment of the city residents, who will be diagnosed with cancer.
