Many youth and women groups that own tents and chairs for hire in Laikipia and Nyandarua have been losing business during political functions due to the colour of their tents.

Organisers of such events are so attached to colours of their political parties that they refuse to take anything that has a colour of a perceived rival party.

This was evident during the official opening of the Jubilee offices in Rumuruti where the organizer was forced to seek another tent because the first one had yellow stripes associated with UDA, a party that is associated with Deputy President William Ruto.

“The one we got later was accepted because it had blue stripes which matched the Azimio colours,” Fredrick Mwangi, a businessman in Rumuruti said.

Many officials of the youth and women groups that own the tents and chairs for hire said they expected to make money during the electioneering season but it seems they have to consider colours.

Organisers demand to see the tents before they commit themselves to hire them.

“When you hear a person tell you that he or she has to see the tents and chairs first, just keep your fingers crossed,” Jane Mugure of Umoja Women Group said.

Mugure said groups expected the tents and chairs to be in high demand during the current electioneering season since the number of aspirants appears to be the highest ever.
