Migori County Assembly Speaker Boaz Okoth and seven others were on Wednesday, February 3, released on bond after they were charged with holding stolen property.
Okoth alongside the seven: Boniface Otieno, Peter Okinyi, Philip Ochieng, John Allan, Vincent Otieno, Clifford Ochieng and Jackline Odira are said to have broken into the County Assembly’s office on Tuesday, February 2 at night.
The eight, on the fateful night, broke into the office of the Chief Finance Officer within the Migori County Assemblyat around 3:00 am, according to police.
They then picked several documents and computers from the office straight to the Speaker’s office where they hid until morning when they were nabbed by detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
According to Migori County Police boss Mark Wanjala, the Speaker and his accomplices hid inside the speaker’s office and refused to come out in what turned out to be a tug of war between the Chief of Staff and the speaker.
“We also recovered a number of files and several computers that were taken from the county assembly’s Chief Finance office,” he said.
The eight denied the charges before Migori Magistrate Dickson Onyango and were all released on a Ksh200,000 bond and one surety of a similar amount or alternative cash bail of Ksh100,000.
The case will be mentioned on February 17, and later be heard on March 15.
