A matatu tout is in trouble after he escaped with the money he collected from passengers who were travelling from Nairobi to Kisii.

Joshua Okenye Nyambati was taken to court for an offence he committed on December 12, 2021, while working with a Transline Shuttle at Afya Centre in Nairobi.

He is accused of stealing Ksh22,000; money meant for bus fare of several passengers who boarded the vehicle.

According to the vehicle’s manager Daniel Geseke Bosire, Nyambati only submitted Ksh2000 claiming that the rest of the money (Ksh22,000) had been paid by the passengers via Mpesa.

Bosire says Nyambati then left to withdraw the said money only to disappear prompting him (Bosire) to report the case at Kamukunji police station.

One month later, Nyambati was spotted at Muthurwa market and immediately arrested. He was then taken to the police station where he was booked and probed before he was arraigned in court and charged.

“You are charged with the offence of stealing Ksh22,000, the property of Daniel Geseke Bosire on October 12, 2021, at Afya Centre along Tom Mboya Street within Nairobi County,” the charge sheet read in part.

He pleaded guilty to the offence but told the court that he stole the money to cater for his children after his wife left him.  “I urge the court to forgive me. I stole the cash paid by passengers because my wife left me with my children who fully depend on me,” he confessed.

The court ordered a probation report before sentencing on February 7, 2022.
