A fuel attendant on Thursday, January 20 died after a matatu veered off the road and rammed into a Total Fuel Station along Limuru road at around 11:49am.

Another attendant sustained serious injuries following the incident which involved the matatu belonging to Ruaka Sacco.

In a video captured by CCTV camera at the Rosslyn Total Petrol Station in Gigiri, the two attendants were busy serving motorists when the incident took place.

The injured attendant was taken to Aga Khan Private Hospital also located along Limuru road where she was treated and later discharged.

Addressing the media, Abdi Hakim who is the manager at Total Energies, Rosslyn Branch said that the driver escaped immediately after the crash took place.

“He fled as most of us were busy trying to avert a bigger tragedy like fire,” Hakim said.

Phineas Mutwiri who is the Karuri Sub-County Police Commander said that the body of the deceased was taken to Kihara Level 4 Hospital mortuary.

Mutwiri revealed that police and detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have already launched a manhunt for the driver who is still in hiding.

The police boss said that already the officers have received enough details of the driver and he will be nabbed.

“The body of the attendant who died was taken to Kihara Level 4 Hospital morgue in Kiambu,” Phineas Mutwiri said.

Asked what might have caused the vehicle to veer off the road, Mutwiri said that investigations are on but officers suspect a brake system failure.

According to Steve Njoro, who is the Ruaka Sacco chairperson, they are yet to establish the driver’s whereabouts.

He said that he neither responded to their calls nor answered their messages.

“We shall cooperate with the police since we have his documents and we have already handed them over to the authorities,” Njoro said.
