Police in Embu county have launched a manhunt for a prison detainee who escaped from the Embu Main prison.

The detainee is said to have escaped when they were at the prison’s garden for their daily activities.

Sources within the prison say that the prisoner escaped unnoticed by prison wardens who were supervising them. He reportedly fled and disappeared in a thicket.

The source, who sought anonymity, said that the detainee is a convict of illicit brew.

Huyu ni wale wa watu wa Chang’aa na ametoka maeneo ya Kanyuambora Mbeere Kaskazini, alitoroka wakiwa shambani hapa prison na bado anatafutwa,” the source revealed.

The escape has been blamed on the laxity of the wardens and their failure to keep a direct eye on the detainees.

Barely two months ago three fugitives escaped from Kamiti maximum prison causing panic.

The three Abdalla Akhulunga Alia Zarkarawi , Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Odhiambo Alia Yusuf would later be arrested in Kitui on their way to Somalia.

The dramatic escape saw Commissioner-general of prison Wycliffe Ogallo sacked and a new commissioner appointed.
