Police in Gatundu South have arrested two middle-aged men in connection with the perennial theft of livestock in the area.
The two men were arrested by members of the public while on transit after they failed to pay the required money for the fare.
The two are reported to have been transporting meat in baskets, a situation that raised questions among the passengers who demanded to know more about their operations.
The angry passengers are reported to have gotten off their entire meat loads from the vehicle before calling the police.
Confirming the incident, Kimunyu Location Chief John Mutheki revealed that the two are being held at Gatundu Police Station awaiting arraignment in court.
“The two are suspected to be part of a racket that has been terrorizing residents at night by stealing and slaughtering their livestock before they transport the meat to unknown markets,” Mutheki said.
The arrest comes in the wake of a resurgence of cattle theft in various villages within Gatundu North and South Constituencies.
In Ngorongo village, for instance, locals have been protesting inaction by the police to curb the increasing number of animal theft in the area.
“Police seem to be doing nothing to contain the growing insecurity in the area more so the theft of our livestock. We can no longer repay loans by selling milk from our dairy animals,” Tabitha Muthoni, a local regretted.
