Police in Kisii have released the number of civilians who committed suicide in 2021.

According to Kisii County Police boss Francis Kooli, a total of 93 people committed suicide last year.

Out of the 93 people, 12 were females while 81 were males.

Kooli said that the number was worrying, and it was time that members of the public are sensitized over the trend.

“It is time we go out there and sensitize our people on the need to discuss and consult. Suicide is not a solution,” he said.

Notably, between July and September, 14 people (13 males and 1 female) committed suicide in the county.

Three were recorded in July, 10 in August and one in September.

Kooli said that Kisii Central recorded the highest number with nine cases, followed by Gucha South (three), Kisii South (two) while Sameta and Kenyenya recorded one case each.

In an earlier interview, Kooli told K24 Digital that most males committed suicide after failing to provide for their families.

One of the suicide cases that attracted public outcry is when a civilian committed suicide inside a police station.

According to World Health Organization, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in the world and most cases take place in low and middle income countries.
