Kenya Premier League champions, Gor Mahia, on Tuesday, July 30, appointed the football club’s assistant coach, Patrick Odhiambo, in charge of the team after its head coach, Hassan Oktay, travelled to his native home, Turkey, to “handle family matters”.

According to Gor Mahia CEO, Lodvick Aduda, Oktay was granted permission to be away for five days to visit his ailing parents and sister.

Odhiambo had replaced Zedekiah Otieno, who left the club to take over as head coach of KCB FC, in November 2018.

Initial reports that celebrated striker, Dennis Oliech, was elevated to the player-coach role have been dismissed by the club’s hierarchy.

While leaving Kenya for Turkey, Oktay exuded confidence in the ability of players he leaves behind.

Though he requested for a 5-day leave, it remains unclear when Oktay will return to Kenya.

Reports, however, indicate that there are high chances that Odhiambo will be in charge of Gor Mahia when they take on Burundian side, Aigle Noir, on Sunday, August 11 in the first leg of the CAF Group Stage qualifiers.
