Former Kiambu County governor, Mr William Kabogo, has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare cancer a national disaster.
Mr Kabogo, who joined other leaders in mourning death of Bomet County governor, Dr Joyce Laboso, said the move would help the government mobilise resources to prioritise cancer detection, treatment and prevention.
“I am saddened by the death of the governor. It is unbelievable that we have lost yet another person to cancer. We must face this disease head on,” Mr Kabogo said.
He described Laboso as a respected leader who was loved not only by Bomet County residents but all Kenyans because of her advocacy for women issues.
“She was a brilliant woman. She was a true servant for her people,” he added.
Mr Kabogo said that the death of Governor Laboso and Kibra MP Ken Okoth is a clear indication that the disease is a threat to Kenyans from all backgrounds.
He said the government must also dig deep to establish the root cause of the surge in the killer disease, urging increased funds to be channeled to the health sector.
