A robbery suspect died in Gatanga, Murang’a County after an angry mob lit a fire and burnt him while inside a pit latrine.

The suspect, identified as Joseph Karanja, 30, had allegedly committed the robbery on Tuesday evening before going into hiding, leaving irate residents baying for his blood.

“At the crack of dawn this morning, the unforgiving residents dispatched a search party for the suspect, in the hope that they would get hold of him,” DCI said.

Through this, the irate Gatanga residents hoped to bring to an end the persistent robberies that had escalated in Kiganjo sub-location, in the larger Gatanga constituency.

“As the search was about to give up at 10am, they stumbled on the suspect at his hideout, close to his father’s compound,” DCI reports.

In a bid to evade arrest, the suspect jumped into a 10-feet pit latrine to save his skin, but his mission was short-lived.

Little did he know that the pit latrine would, in a matter of minutes, be his waterloo.

Meanwhile, the agitated mob was gathered firewood and other flammable materials which they threw into the pit and started a fire, killing the suspect on the spot.

Following the incident, police have cautioned members of the public not to take the law into their own hands, but endeavour to report such crimes for quick legal action.
