Airport manager at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Peter Wafula, has announced that certain flights have been diverted from the airport to Mombasa’s Moi International Airport over bad weather.

This comes after a similar rerouting was done on September 7, 2021 to flights that were scheduled to land at the Wilson Airport. The airplanes were diverted to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

Temperatures had significantly dropped to 17 degrees centigrade as visibility fell to about 900m.

“We are currently experiencing bad weather conditions at Wilson Airport, Nairobi and hence all incoming flights are being diverted to land at JKIA. Please bear with us as we continue to monitor the situation,” an affected airline said in a statement.

Most flight diversions occur for three main reasons: bad weather at the destination airport, technical problems with the aircraft or issues with passengers.

Bad weather is always determined by the visibility on the ground and, to a certain extent, how low the cloud is. These limits vary from airport to airport, runway to runway and aircraft type to aircraft type.
