Police in Kisumu are investigating circumstances under which a one-day-old infant was found dumped into a pit latrine.

While confirming the matter, Kisumu East OCPD James Musyimi said the alleged incident took place at Rae village, Nyalunya sub-location in Kolwa Central within Kisumu East Sub-county.

According to Musyimi the matter was reported to the nearby police station by a landlord who was informed by his tenants that there was an infant in a pit latrine within his rental compound.

“He immediately responded and informed the police, who immediately visited the scene and rescued the infant with the help of members of the public,” Musyimi said.

Musyimi further revealed the infant girl still had her umbilical cord intact.

“We moved her to the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH) where she got admitted and is in fair condition,” he said.

The police boss condemned the act and said that it is ill-mannered to dump an innocent infant and the offence is punishable before the law.

He further said that every human being is an asset both to the family and state.

Musyimi also appealed to residents to report to the police whoever might find anybody who gave birth recently and does not know the whereabouts of the child, to help the police in their investigations.

“I am appealing to law-abiding citizens to report to us any person who gave birth recently and are not aware of the whereabouts of their child so that we can get to offer her counselling since prosecution is not our priority,” he said.

He added that their main mandate is to ensure that they provide peace and protect life.
