A family in Turkana is crying for justice after their Form One daughter June Lokuruka was thrown out of St. Brigid’s Girls’ High School Kiminini in Trans Nzoia County over her medical condition.

According to Enkantim’s parents, Lokuruka was admitted to nearby Kiminini Cottage Hospital where she received medical attention.

However, her condition worsened and she was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret where she was taken through medical tests.

According to her medical report seen by K24 digital, Lokuruka was diagnosed with brief psychotic episode.

She was admitted from 14 August, 2021 to 20 August, 2021 when she was discharged after recovering fully.

Speaking to K24 digital, the girl’s father Patrick Lokuruka, said they were shocked after St. Brigid’s Girls’ Violata Lukoritu refused to re-admit her on grounds that the girl was not mentally fit to continue with her studies in the national school.

He said that the principal told them the school’s Board of Management (BoM) sat and unanimously resolved that the girl should not be allowed back to the school.

“As much as I want her to study in her preferred school, I’m worried that she might be victimized,” Lokuruka said calling on Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha to intervene.

Speaking exclusively to K24 digital, the BoM Chairperson Maurice Anthony Crowley said the decision was taken in the best interest of the girl, the school and other 1,500 students.

“It was resolved by the school’s BoM that it would be better for her to to school from her home for the sake of her future. She should study in a day school because of her condition,” Crowley said.

Lokuruka, who comes from a needy family, scored 367 marks out of the possible 500 in the 2020 KCPE and secured a sponsor to her dream school of St. Brigid’s Girls’.
