Kenya’s Harambee Stars lost clear goal scoring opportunities against Rwanda to draw 1-1 in match day two of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier Sunday.
Stars Skipper Michael Olunga had given Kenya the lead in the 10th minute, but the home side levelled in the 21st minute through Abdul Rwatubyaye.
However, it is the Jacob Mulee coached side that had clear goal scoring opportunities but wasteful in front of goal.
Kenya’s talisman Michael Olunga will have himself to blame after making a superb turn towards the end of the first half, twisting a charging Rwandese defender, but Olunga failed to utilise the golden opportunity after shooting wide with only the keeper to beat.
Olunga would find himself in a familiar position in the second half, but his thunderous shot was cleared on the line as Kenya kicked off the second half with intent.
Both teams made changes towards the end of the game, but it was not enough, as both teams settled for a point. Prior to this game, Kenya had drawn against Uganda in Nairobi four days ago.
Courtesy of the draw against Rwanda, Kenya are now placed second with two points in Group “E” of the 2022 World Cup qualifications to be held in Qatar. Mali tops the group.
Kenya is in Group E against Mali, Rwanda and Uganda.
The match was staged at the Nyamirambo Stadium (Kigali stadium) behind closed doors as measures to avoid the spread of the deadly coronavirus pandemic.
