Thirty Kenyan fishermen have been arrested by Uganda police for fishing in the neighbouring country’s waters in Lake Victoria.

The fishermen were arrested in different beaches in Suba North and Suba South, Homa Bay County.

The weekend swoop was conducted by officers from Ugandan Revenue Authorities and security agencies at Sare and Kiwa beaches.

During the arrest, over ten fishing boats and gears were confiscated.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Harman Shambi confirmed the arrests but said they were yet to get more details from their Ugandan counterparts.

Mr Shambi said the fishermen are being held at Hama Island.

Homa Bay County Beach Management Units Network Chairman Edward Oremo condemned the constant harassment of local fishermen.

“This must be brought to an end because fishermen struggle and yet they are being harassed on a daily basis by the Ugandan officers,” Mr Oremo said.

Last week, three fishermen were arrested and released on Sh30,000 cash bail in Nyandiwa beach by Ugandan soldiers.
