West Asembo MCA Ambrose Akuno has admitted to receiving a bribe from the Governor’s office to conceal corruption cases in the county.

Mr. Akuno, who has been sick, revealed that he was visited at the hospital by a section of his colleagues and given the money which he thought was a contribution to support his medication.

“I was given Ksh.150,000, an amount which I only came to realize later was part of the bribe handed to colleagues. I suspect the move to give me the Ksh150,000 aimed at silencing me since I have been the most vocal MCA on corruption matters in the county,” Akuno told K24tv digital.

Siaya MCAs were allegedly given bribes after they refused to pass the County’s Appropriation Bill for the year ending 2020/2021.

This is after it emerged that there were no explanation as to why bursaries had not been released, Project Management Committee (PMC) monies not paid and statutory deductions not remitted.

Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode, however, denied the corruption allegations and defended his MCAs over claims of receiving the money to compromise their mandate.

Last week during a press conference, Mr. Okode dismissed claims that Siaya MCAs had been compromised by the executive to cover up Ksh600 million graft case.

“There is nowhere MCAs agreed with the executive to compromise an oversight role of the assembly. Which assembly committee is that? I have no idea of such happenings,” Okode had said during the press conference.

A list of MCAs who were allegedly bribed up to Ksh290,00 has been going viral on social media with the governor’s office put on the spot for being behind the bribery allegations.
