Police officer charged for raping refugee in Turkana

A police officer who allegedly raped a South Sudanese refugee in 2019 before fleeing was on Friday denied bail by a court in Lodwar.

Kennedy Kamande a police Constable went into hiding after allegedly raping the refugee at the Kakuma 4 patrol base in Turkana County.

In a turnout of events the officer told the court that he didn’t commit the heinous act to the refugee with Kamande maintaining his innocence towards Chief Magistrate Mwangi K Mwangi.

The officer who went into hiding after he was released on bail was nabbed by detectives attached to the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU).

A warrant of arrest was on July 22 issued that the officer Commanding Kakuma police station to work with officers from IAU to nab the suspect.

An officer attached to the unit told K24 Digital that Kamande was arrested at his home in Murang’a County and driven to Capitol Hill Police Station, with the prosecution lining up a total of 13 witnesses.

It is said Kamande spent his Thursday night at the station before he was taken to Lodwar to face justice.

According to the officer, Kamande was first nabbed on April 29 at the United Nations Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

The case will commence on September 2, 2021,” ruled the Magistrate.

Meanwhile, two police officers were on Friday charged for taking a bribe in Nyeri County, according to a report filed at Nyeri Police Station the duo received a bribe contrary to section 6(1)(b) of the bribery Act2016.

Each accused person was fined Sh250,000 in default to serve one year in jail. As read with section 66(2) of the Anti-corruption and economic crimes act,” part of the police statement read

The two Titus Mutua and Sammy Kahindi were convicted before Nyeri Principal Magistrate Okuche.
