Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has been freed by a Bungoma court on Kshs 150,000 cash bail.

Barasa was arrested by police in Bungoma in the early morning of Monday, August 2 for the crime of causing grievous body harm to musician and contractor Steve Kay on Friday, July 30, at Baptist Lurare Primary School in Kimilili.

Through his lawyer Brian Khaemba, Barasa denied the charges and he was freed by Chief Magistrate Glady’s Odhiambo on a surety of a similar amount.

“I hereby grant the accused bond of Ksh150,000 with one suitable surety or an alternative cash bail of the same amount,” Magistrate Odhimbo said.

“The offence with which the accused is charged is of a personal nature and the parties are at liberty to explore reconciliation it is thus my view that denying the accused to reach out to the complainant will be against the spirit of Alternative Dispute Reconciliation,” the magistrate added.

The case against Barasa will be up for mention on September 28.

Police say they received a P3 form from the musician after the July 30 drama witnessed at Baptist Lurare Primary School.

Barasa was set to commission five new classrooms on Friday last week that were built at Baptist Lurare Primary School through National Government Constituency Development Fund (NGCDF) at Kamukuywa, Kimilili.

Drama ensued after Barasa found out that musician Steve Kay together with one Ronald Graham had locked up the new classrooms demanding a cheque of Ksh3.4 million for construction fees before handing over the new classrooms.
