A 29-year-old man has committed suicide at Sunflower area of Makutano township within West Pokot county.
The man whose body was found in his house on Monday morning hanged himself on the roof of his rental house using a bedsheet.
Confirming the incident, West Pokot County Police Commander Jackson Tumwet said the body of Felix Yego was discovered dangling in his rental house by neighbours who had not seen him for the last two days.
Upon pushing his door, the neighbours found out that he had locked himself from inside and they were forced to break the door to access the room where they found his body hanging.
“The neighbours alerted the police officers who visited the scene and found the deceased’s body still hanging on the rooftop,” the police commander said.
Tumwet added that the police found his body hanging with a bedsheet around his neck.
“A body search was conducted but no visible injuries were seen. However, there was a suicide note on a table within the house bidding farewell to family and friends. His phone also had similar messages sent to his sister, girlfriend and uncle,” Tumwet said.
The police commander further stated that the motive for Yego’s suicide could not be immediately established and that his body was moved to Kapenguria County Referral hospital mortuary pending a postmortem.
Tumwet noted that cases of people committing suicide within West Pokot county have drastically increased citing that the police station has been recording suicide cases on a weekly basis.
“People are suffering from mental health which has pushed them to end their lives. The cases have increased countrywide,” he added.
He asked members of the community to come out and seek assistance from their friends, relatives or the police if they are suffering from depression.
“People should learn to check on their neighbours and relatives. Seeking help will reduce suicide cases,” he said.
