A mother and her three children have perished in a fire incident that burnt down their home on the eve of Wednesday morning in Molo Hill, Subukia, Nakuru county

The fire, whose source is yet to be established, is said to have started around 6:00 am.

Speaking at the scene, Nakuru County Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri regretted the incident and confirmed that the four are no more.

“We woke up to sad news of a family that has perished in a fire incident in Molo hill area, a mother with her three children aged one, three, and six years,” Said Kiraguri.

According to Kiraguri, the incident occurred shortly after two of her children, both in forms two and three, left for school.

Two other children, who are in classes five and six, are the ones who noticed the fire incident.

They attempted to rush to their mother’s room to alert her and save the situation but it was too late since the room was already up in flames.

“The two that were in the house and survived the tragedy escaped. Their screams are what sent an alarm to the neighbours who after seeing the huge flames began the rescue mission. The mother and the three children unfortunately perished.” She added.

Even though investigations have been launched,  residents suspect the fire might have been caused by a lamp.

“I heard my son calling out my name this morning and told me about the fire.  I joined the children in screaming for help, and immediately our neighbours joined us in putting out the fire.

Area MP Samuel Gachobe urged residents not to speculate or point fingers at each other until the results of the investigation are out.

He pledged to construct a temporary house for the remaining family members as they continue with burial arrangements.

“Nothing was salvaged from the fire. I’ll lead residents in making sure the children have a home for the interim. I call upon other well-wishers to give a hand in all possible ways.  Burial arrangements for four people is not an easy thing,” he said.

Bodies of the four were taken to the Nakuru municipality mortuary
