At least thirteen people die in Nyamira county every month by committing suicide, area county commissioner Amos Mariba has confirmed.

Mariba said that the victims commit suicide over issues emanating from domestic and gender-based violence.

Speaking to reporters in his office, the commissioner said suicide has become another major cause of death in addition to covid 19 and malaria in the county.

He challenged couples to be tolerant to one another once they have a misunderstanding adding that suicide is not the best solution to their differences.

He further noted that most children are now orphaned as a result of such deaths as suicide and were undergoing difficulties in a bid to sustain them both socially and economically.

He challenged churches and other departments related to counselling to take a leading role in talking and counselling families in a bid to reduce the suicide incidents which have reached an alarming stage.

The commissioner asked couples to employ dialogues in addressing their domestic challenges instead of resorting to violence and committing suicide.

Records indicate that Nyamira North, Manga and Nyamira South sub-counties were leading in cases of suicide and domestic violence.
