A woman has been selected as chief for the first time in the history of Mandera County.

This is after Leila Mohammed Kullow beat several contenders to emerge victorious for the position of assistant chief of Kamor Location in Mandera East Sub-county.

Leila promised to assist women who she claimed have been marginalised because they fear sharing their problems with men leaders.

“The women can now give me the problems they have been hiding and I will assist them,” Leila told KBC.

Mohamed Hussein, a resident of Mandera, commended the government for giving an opportunity to woman to lead in an area where men have dominated leadership positions.

“The government has opened a wide door for women in Mandera County,” he said.

Another resident, Fatuma Abdow, said expressed optimism saying women could share their problems with the new assistant chief freely.

“Some of us feared sharing our problems with male leaders. But now, we have someone who will listen to our problems,” she said.

All Mandera elected leaders are men except the county Woman Representative Amina Gedow.
