Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya now wants women who have undergone female genital mutilation (FGM) to be classified as people living with disabilities.

Speaking in Trans Nzoia County, Natembeya raised concerns over the increasing cases of FGM adding that the act is tantamount to incapacitating women.

“We know the anatomy of boys is set in a way that it can undergo the cut but for women, I wonder what the perpetrators are looking for,” he said.

According to Natembeya, women who have undergone FGM should rank first in the group of people living with disabilities.

“We have intelligence. Some of them undergo the cut due to peer pressure but others are forced by their parents and these are the people we as the government are looking for,” he said.

He further castigated those still practising FGM saying it is inhuman and dangerous to the well-being of the victims.

“We are putting up machinery and very soon you will see the results and some people here will cry,” he said.

The Regional Commissioner also warned those violating the rights of children saying they will be dealt with according to the law.

“Some of you may face 23 years in prison for child right violations. You will face prison walls for some of these useless cases,” he warned
