A road sign board named after the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been burned down.
Images accessed by K24 Digital show the signboard up in flames after unknown people used car tyres to set it ablaze.
It appears that the sign board was burnt at night since it was still there at the end of the day on Monday.
The sign board, which was reinstated barely a fortnight ago after it was brought down, has been at the centre of controversy.
A section of Kenyans on social media argued that the COTU boss has done nothing for workers he represents to warrant a road named after him.
Among those who wanted the sign board brought down is City Lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi who promised to foot legal expenses for activist Boniface Mwangi if brings it down and gets arrested.
Atwoli, however, ensured the signboard is reinstated and went on to dare those who want to bring it down again to do so.
He said a CCTV camera has been installed in the area to monitor those who will be after bringing the signboard down.
“The Nairobi County Government has reinstalled the sign. If you think you came from the moon go try to remove it again. Also, a CCTV has been installed for the security of the area,” Atwoli tweeted.
When Mwangi went to bring the signboard down, he said a group of youths had been hired to guard it since they sent him away.
The road formerly known as DikDik Road was renamed Francis Atwoli road on Thursday, May 27.
The road sign was unveiled in the presence of Nairobi Deputy Governor Ann Kananu and other leaders.
