Police officers in Kilifi County are investigating an incident where unknown people exhumed a body of a woman and went away with it.

According to pictures seen by K24 Digital, the grave of the late Fatuma Maro was left open as the thieves apparently also went away with the coffin.

She was buried three months ago in Mazeras, Mabirikani area of Kilifi County.

According to the late’s son Stanley Lwambi, they suspect the incident could have happened because of a land conflict between their family and a tycoon of Arabic origin.

He says the tycoon, whose details are scanty, has been claiming ownership of the land where their mother had been laid to rest.

Lwambi says they reported the incident to the police and are now asking for justice.

Rabai Police Commander Fred Abuga, who exclusively spoke to K24 Digital on phone, confirmed the incident and said an investigation has been launched into the shocking incident.

“We got the report yesterday that the body has been exhumed and it is missing. We are yet to get more information on who could be behind the matter and what was his or her motive. Our officers are investigating the matter,” he said.

He added that area residents have been left in shock but urged them to maintain order as they pursue those behind the act.

“We call upon residents with leads on the incident to provide us with information so that we can take action. This is an unusual incident and that is why we are so much interested in getting to the bottom of the matter,” he urged.

Abuga further said members of the public should not speculate on the incident but wait for the outcome of their investigation.
