Police in Msambweni are investigating the death of a Mount Kenya University student who drowned in a swimming pool at a Diani hotel.

The deceased, Stephen Omondi, 28, drowned at Safari Beach hotel while swimming alongside other 17 students.

Confirming the incident, Kwale Police Commander Amrose Oloo said the team from Mount Kenya University – Thika campus checked in yesterday at the said hotel.

“The students were undertaking their normal studies until after lunch when they decided to swim at the hotel pool. The deceased then lost balance and drowned,” the county police commander said, adding that efforts to rescue the deceased by his colleagues ended in vain.

Omondi was pronounced dead on arrival at Diani hospital.

This comes barely a week after twins drowned at Gazi beach in Msambweni, and the Police Commander has urged visitors to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations set by the hotel management while swimming for their safety.
