Deputy President William Ruto has once again insisted that the government is keen to deliver the 11 stadia Jubilee Party promised six years ago.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP Ruto promised 11 state-of-the-art stadia in their election campaigns in 2013, a pledge that has not yet been fulfilled.

Dr Ruto while appearing on K24 TV new political show, Punchline, that is hosted by Ms Anne Kiguta on Sunday, said that Jubilee is still committed to build the promised stadia.

He said the delay on the promise is due to the October 26, 2017, presidential rerun, which used part of the stadia funds.

“Our commitment to deliver on the stadia is solid. We had a time frame. Of course, unfortunately as fate would have it, we went into a second election and spent about Sh13 billion, part of which was supposed to be deployed to do some of those things,” Mr Ruto said.

The DP further promised that the government will have built all the 11 proposed stadia by the end of the first quarter of 2020.

“These stadia and you can confirm with the Sports Ministry, will be completed either by the end of this year or the first quarter of next year; all the 11 stadia including the refurbishment of Nyayo stadium,” Ruto added.

Mr. Ruto’s latest promise conflicts the statement made by Sports Principal Secretary Kirimi Kaberia back in February this year that the government will not be able to deliver the five stadia initially promised, but was working to ensure one state-of-art stadium is built before President Kenyatta’s term ends in 2022.
