Two people from Shimanyiro Village in Ikolomani Constituency, Kakamega County died on Thursday, and 19 others hospitalised after eating contaminated beef.

The affected consumed meat of a sick cow that died last Monday. It is suspected the cow had anthrax.

The deceased are a girl aged 14 years and a 31-year-old man.

The survivors were admitted at the Kakamega County Referral Hospital with severe stomach pains.

It is reported a middle-aged woman, who was the owner of the cow, invited her neighbours to slaughter the animal and take its meat.

The cow’s owner also fed on the contaminated beef – and is among those hospitalised.

Area elder, Eliakim Makani, urged Shimanyiro villagers to resist the temptation of feasting on contaminated meat, especially that of a sick livestock.
