A man has been charged in court for stealing a wedding ring and other jewellery worth Ksh5M from a 70-year-old couple using a pair of scissors and a crowbar.

Newton Ngunjiri who was arrested in possession of a Nokia phone worth Sh8,000 belonging to the 70-year-old couple was arraigned in court and charged with two counts of robbery with violence and handling stolen property contrary to the law.

Particulars of the offence are that on 16th April 2021 at Thingiri Crescent off Thigiri Road in Westlands Nairobi jointly with others not before court while armed with dangerous weapon namely craw bar and scissor robbed

Said Kirit Shah a box containing assorted Golden and Diamond jewellery, credit cards,one iphone,one Tecno phone, Samsung , Nokia phones, Apple ipad and cash worth Sh5,000 all valued at Sh5M.

Newton is charged with a second count of handling stolen property. Its alleged that on the same date he was found in possession of a Nokia phone worth Sh8k knowing well that it was a stolen property. 

According to the 70-year-old complainant in the matter,on April 16 at around 0200 hrs while sleeping in his house, he was woken up by someone’s hand on his mouth and the person instructed him not to talk, the lights were off but the robbers had torches, his hands and his wife’s were tired using a rope by the thieves.

In his statement to court Shah says the thieves asked him for money and he pointed the walldrope where they walked in and started ransacking everything,they removed all the clothes from the walldrope and went to my wife where they removed all the rings on her fingers.

“I told them that i live with my elderly mother and they should not touch her,they went to my mother’s room and brought her night nurse to my room and made her sit with us as they continued to ransack my room” said Shah.

Newton pleaded not guilty before Nairobi magistrate David Ndugi and was released on a cash bail of Sh500k or bond of Sh1M with one contact person.
