President Uhuru Kenyatta has classified Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru counties as a one-zoned area in relation to Covid-19 directives issued on Friday, March 26.

Following that classification, many Kenyans sought clarification on what the terminology one-zoned area meant and implied.

Does it mean that people who live, for instance in Kitengala (Kajiado) or Athi River (Machakos), can still travel to Nairobi or Kiambu for work?

“That there shall be cessation of all movement by road, rail, or air into and out of the disease infected area as one zoned area comprising of the Counties of Nairobi, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu and Nakuru, effective Midnight tonight,” announced President Kenyatta in the Public Order No. 2 of 2021 on the Coronavirus Pandemic.

To clarify what the President’s order meant, State House Chief of Staff Nzioka Waita quickly tweeted that residents in the five counties are free to move within the one-zoned area.

“Kindly note that the Cessation of Movement is in and out of the 5 counties (Nairobi, Nakuru, Kiambu, Machakos, and Kajiado) as One Zoned Area. You can therefore move freely within the five counties. You will not however be able to leave and enter the One Zoned Area,” said Waita.
