Following her swearing-in as the new President of Tanzania on Friday, March 19, Samia Suluhu Hassan’s first role was the announcement of John Magufuli’s funeral plans to the country.

President Suluhu declared a 21-day national mourning period for the late President Magufuli who died from cardiac-related complications on Wednesday, March 17.

Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of how the memorial events will unfold beginning tomorrow.

Saturday, March 20: Magufuli’s body will be taken to St Peter’s Church in Dar es Salaam for a memorial service. Thereafter, it will be taken to Uhuru Stadium in the city for leaders to bid farewell to the departed president.

Sunday, March 21: Residents Dar es Salaam to bid their farewells to the late President. The body will then be transported to Dodoma.

Monday, March 22: Declares public holiday to allow the public time to view Magufuli’s body beginning at 9 am. Body to be moved to Mwanza.

Tuesday, March 23: The public to view Magufuli’s body and bid their farewells in Mwanza. The body to be transported to Chato thereafter. Mwanza, ceremony then to Chato

Wednesday, March 24: Family, residents of Chato, and surrounding regions to bid their farewells to the late Magufuli.

Thursday, March 25: Public holiday declared on day Magufuli will be buried after a funeral service at Chato’s Catholic Church.
