Embu Governor Martin Wambora has been elected the new chairman of the Council of Governors (CoG), replacing Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
On Friday, the governors also voted Kisii Governor James Ongwae as Wambora’s deputy.
Wambora takes over from Oparanya who has served as the CoG boss for two terms while Ongwae replaces Muranga Governor Mwangi wa Iria.
The Embu governor received support from President Uhuru Kenyatta who had urged his handshake partner, Raila Odinga, to rally his ODM governors behind Wambora.
Governor Wambora is the fifth governor to head CoG.
Others who have served as CoG’s boss are former Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto, former Meru Governor Peter Munya, and Turkana Governor Josephat Nanok.
In his farewell address, Governor Oparanya said that he was grateful to God for his guidance and wisdom which saw him lead his colleagues for two years.
