A police officer who shot and killed his civilian friend at Nyari police station in Westlands, Nairobi County has asked for forgiveness from Kenyans, saying the incident was an accident.

Through his lawyer, Danstan Omari, the accused, Edgar Mokamba, said that he deeply regrets the incident that led to the death of his close friend.

The lawyer, while addressing the media after a court session, said they will pursue a plea deal with the public prosecutor for the suspect to plead guilty to a manslaughter charge.

The police officer is said to have been chewing miraa with his friend in a car while he was on guard duty when he opened fire shooting his civilian to death.

His lawyer said that the officer was with his friend when a woman who appeared to be of Somali descent entered the gate looking suspicious.

He immediately took out his gun, the lawyer said, moved towards the woman whom he thought was a terrorist.

The lawyer said that when the officer was near the woman he cocked his gun which released bullets, killing his friend inside the car.

The suspect appeared before the court on Thursday, January 7, to plead to a murder charge but the High Court directed that he undergoes the mandatory mental test first.
