By Matthew Ndung’u,

It is a dark start of year 2021 for families in Githurai village of Ruiru, Kiambu County after an abandoned shrub where five children were playing caved in resulting in their death.

The children, all aged between three and seven years, were playing within the compound of an abandoned construction site when the tragedy occurred.

Two of them succumbed to breathing complications while being rushed to different private hospitals within the scene of the incident.

According to Ruiru Sub County police commander Phineas Lingera, the five children drowned in the water under the shrub.

“The five children were playing on top of an abandoned shrub within an abandoned construction of a plot. The shrub caved in when they were playing and inside there was water so they drowned,” he said.

Lingera said that all the five bodies have been retrieved and taken to different preservation facilities.

He regretted the incident saying his jurisdiction was optimistic not to record any incident during the year 2021 crossover but the startling happened.

“We are ending the year and our hope was that we would not record any incident but the disaster has happened,” said the police boss.
