Nearly 10,000 people were arrested across the country over the last one week for flouting Covid-19 health protocols, Inspector-General of Police (IG) Hillary Mutyambai has revealed.

On Friday, IG Mutyambai said that by Wednesday, November 11, 6,043 suspects had been nabbed for contravening curfew orders while another 3,717 were arrested for not wearing face masks in public.

For flouting the facemask directive, offenders must part with Sh20, 000 fine, meaning that the State will collect Sh74,340,000 in just one week.

In total, 9,760 were nabbed this week for breaking Covid-19 regulations after President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the police to strictly enforce the law amid surging virus cases.

Mutyambai said that 256 bars were closed down and 463 motor vehicles impounded over the same period.

“I ask all the police officers to be extra vigilant and ensure that they take action against anyone who breaks the law,” he said.

Kenya has so far recorded a total of 66,723 coronavirus cases and 1,203 deaths.
