Detectives based in Meru County have gunned down two ex-Kamiti convicts in a fierce shoot out.

The duo, who served time at Kamiti Maximum Prison for robbery with violence, was captured on CCTV footage several times engaging in violent robberies within Meru County.

After the shoot-out, police recovered a Patchett submachine gun that the thugs were using to rob shops, especially M-Pesa agents.

The manhunt to capture the criminals, which was authorized by the Meru-based detectives, was launched following a public outcry by M-Pesa operators.

Last night, the detectives said that the spotted a suspicious motorcycle with concealed number plates upon which they confronted the riders at Makutano area within Meru.

Police said that the two passengers who were riding the motorbike alighted and opened fire with the Patchett submachine gun.

The detectives fired back, killing the two on the spot while the motorbike rider escaped.

On Monday morning, police said that they were still in pursuit of the escaped criminal, promising to bring to an end their spate of crimes.
